KITK Tips For Choosing The Right SPF

KITK Tips For Choosing The Right SPF

‘Tis the season for frothy lattes, cuddles & getting away with leaving the house in an oversized sweater & not looking like a complete bum.

BUT it’s also the season where lots of us forget that we need SPF just as much as in the summer; it’s not because it’s not scorching hot that we don’t need to protect our precious skin. The sun is still there & is one of the most aging forms of oxidative damage to our skin, which is why it’s so important to use SPF daily, rain, sun or snow!

The importance of SPF is amplified when we use active ingredients like AHA/BHA & retinol, which exfoliate, promote skin cell turnover & get rid of dead skin cells, which act as a protective shield against UVA/UVB rays.

Here are a few things to consider regarding SPF:

  • physical/mineral (zinc/titanium dioxide based) over chemical; physical SPF sits on the surface of the skin, doesn’t break down in the sun & reflects away the UVA/UVB, whereas chemical SPF gets absorbed & enters the bloodstream, where it disrupts hormones, releases free radicals & trigger allergic reactions
  • broad spectrum ALWAYS to protect against both UVA & UVB
  • SPF should be above 30 & for the face, I prefer anything 40+ (but don’t be fooled by products claiming to have an SPF over 60; it’s usually a sign that the company added unhealthy chemical ingredients as a “filler” & provides a false sense of security that you don’t need to reapply)
  • always make sure to reapply, especially if you’re spending the majority of your day outside & don’t rely on a waterproof label to skimp on re-application
  • use a vitamin C serum/moisturizer or take it daily in capsule form to increase the protection of your SPF
  • choose cream over spray; it’s hard to apply a spray in a thickness that’ll actually protect
  • avoid oxybenzone at all costs; it’s linked to hormone disruption, cell damage that can cause cancer, endometriosis & abnormal sperm function
  • apply it ~20 min. before going outside to give skin time to absorb it
