How I Overcame My Gym Anxiety & Why You Can Too a.k.a. How The Place That Once Scared Me Is Now My Second Home!

Gym anxiety.

We’ve all been there.

There are TONS of different ways to overcome it but in my experience, the best is to FACE IT.

The only way to face it is to GO anyway, even if you’re anxious about it, even if it makes you feel uncomfortable, even if it makes you feel afraid & even if you doubt your abilities.

I started working out on July 4th, just nine short months ago.

Just walking into the gym for the first time to pay for my membership took a lot of courage. I was overcome with thoughts about being the “new girl”.

I had no idea what to expect & given that I’d just finally been weight restored, I was afraid I wouldn’t be able to get through a class. I didn’t want to be the girl who walks out mid-way cause it was too hard.

I didn’t want everyone to look at me & presume I was too weak cause of my small body.

I also had no idea how to hold a plank, do a push up or maintain proper form while lifting.

Safe to say, I walked into the gym pretty much clueless.

But guess what? I DIDN’T MISS A DAY SINCE.

But, truth of the matter is, I did NOT enjoy every minute of that first month or two. There were days I left telling myself I was never going back. The classes were so hard, I could barely make it through the warm up.

I used to walk into class early to get the spot at the far back so I could make a run for it smoothly if I felt I couldn’t do it. Today, I get to the gym early to claim my spin bike in front centre & save my spot for weight training right in front of the mirror. Crazy, right?

I overcame my gym anxiety by facing it even on the days where all I wanted to do was stay in bed & cry about how I wasn’t strong enough to get through a class.

Today, the place that scared me & made me anxious just 9 months ago is my home away from home & the people I met are like family.

YOU CAN OVERCOME YOUR GYM ANXIETY TOO.

It’s not easy, but nothing worth having is. It’s not easy, but it’s attainable.

Sometimes, we need to face the things that scare us most HEAD STRONG to see how much strength we really have.

You don’t have to start out being the strongest, best or most fit. NOBODY DOES.

You just have to START.

There will be moments where you doubt why you started, but if you push through them, YOU CAN & WILL OVERCOME IT.
