Kelly’s Top 18 “Foods of the Month Finds” a.k.a. All-The-Reasons-You’re-Headed-To-The-Grocery-Store-Stat!

Hi babies!!! <3

I hope you’re all having a happy SaturYAY, even in this GROSS AF WEATHER (If you’re in Montreal!). I do have a great idea for you lovies – Since it’s rainy, gloomy, grey & cold out (ON JULY 1ST! WTF?!), IT’S THE PERFECT DAY TO GO GROCERY SHOPPING.

And so, without further ado, I’m going to tell you munchkins about my TOP 18 FOOD FINDS OF THE MONTH! (If only you know how much narrowing down I had to do, HOLY EFF!) I seriously tried to limit myself to 15 foods… BUT I JUST COULDN’T HELP MYSELF! Sorry, my loves… I guess that grocery-shopping list is going to be a TAD BIT LONGER! Oops!

By the way my loves, this is something I plan on doing every month (If I get positive feedback from it!). I’ve said it time & time again, but I’ll say it once more (FORGIVE ME?), recovery from my eating disorder has not only allowed me to work on myself & get better both physically & mentally, BUT IT HAS ALSO ALLOWED ME TO MAKE THE BEST LIFESTYLE CHANGE IN THE WORLD, one that I would never ever look back on!

Learning to eat clean, ALMOST gluten-free & refined sugar-free (Hey, a girl in recovery is allowed to cheat & have fun every now & then!), healthy, good-for-you, nutrient-dense & healthy-fat foods & educating myself about EVERY SINGLE THING THAT GOES INTO MY BODY has been the most rewarding (BUT FULL OF EFFORT, TIME, COMMITMENT & DEDICATION) thing in the world.

Yes, I’m strict. Yes, I’m hard on myself. Yes, I do my research. Yes, I don’t make (MANY) exceptions, BUT THAT’S SIMPLY BECAUSE I HAVE NEVER FELT OR LOOKED BETTER & MORE ENERGIZED IN MY ENTIRE LIFE. And when you feel THIS GOOD, trust me when I say that NOTHING IN THE WORLD JUSTIFIES RUINING IT!

This is not to say that you munchkins need to make a massively-huge lifestyle change overnight. I’ve told you & I’ll say it again (YES, again!), it’s not easy.

YOU NEED TO BE FULLY READY, BOTH MENTALLY & PHYSICALLY.

You need to be committed, motivated, dedicated, READY & EAGER TO LEARN, open-minded, adventurous (when it comes to trying new foods that you never would have thought you’d try!)

& YOU NEED TO WANT THIS FOR YOURSELF!

AND, if you’re not at that point in your life yet, for whatever reason, THAT’S TOTALLY OKAY. You should not feel bad about it & you shouldn’t beat yourself up over it or put yourself down.

BUT, WHAT YOU CAN DO, IN THE INTERIM, IS MAKE SMALL, EASIER-TO-DO LIFESTYLE CHANGES EVERY NOW & THEN, all of which will help you SLOWLY transition into a healthier way of eating & ultimately, living!

AND TRUST ME WHEN I SAY THAT ONCE YOU START, YOU WILL BECOME MORE & MORE KNOWLEGEABLE & IN TURN, MORE & MORE MOTIVATED & COMMITTED TO BETTERING YOUR EATING & LIFESTYLE HABITS & BECOMING A BETTER YOU!

These are just a few suggestions of some of the (MILLION + 1) great food finds I’ve discovered throughout my journey! Try substituting some of your similar unhealthier food choices for some of these & that will already be a step in the right direction, my loves! 

Here we go!!!!

1. RX Bar (Maple Sea Salt)

I’m obsessed with all things RX BAR, a.k.a. I LOVE EVERY SINGLE FLAVOUR, but this one is my all-time fave & is legit PANCAKES in its healthiest, raw-est, & REALEST form!

Made with only 6 ingredients (Egg whites, dates, pecans, cashews, sea salt & natural maple syrup!), each bar packs 12G OF PROTEIN & 5G OF FIBRE!

They make for the perfect mid-morning/afternoon snack & will keep you full for like EVER. I seriously swear by them!

AND BEFORE YOU ASK, yes, they do have a lot of sugar, BUT take a look at the ingredients list – NONE OF IT IS REFINED. It’s all natural & derived from whole good-for-you foods!

P.S. My two other fave flavours are: Chocolate Sea Salt & Blueberry!

2. Kapow NOW! NoCheez Chickpea Vegan Crackers

HOLY EFF, these are probably the MOST ADDICTIVE CRACKERS.

You won’t be able to put them down & the best part? YOU DON’T NEED TO FEEL BAD ABOUT IT!

They are LOADED WITH PROTEIN & nutrients!

Made with chickpeas, turmeric (FAVE!), nutritional yeast (Hey, B12, waddup?), rice flour & coconut oil, these babes are vegan, gluten-free & contain NO NUTS, DAIRY and SOY OR ADDED SUGAR! Uh… WOW!

What I also LOVE about these babies is that they’re the perfect size to just munch on as is but they’re also just the right size to dip into spreads or hummus or to spread cheese or jam on!

I haven’t yet found these in Montreal (WEH!), but you can get them on the KAPOWNOW website! HARD TO FIND, BUT SO WORTH IT!

3. Le Pain des Fleurs Organic Fig Crispbread

I’m warning you munchkins! These seem like regular old “Why-is-she-making-a-big-deal-out-of-these?” crackers, BUT THEY’RE NOT!

Yes, they are simple, BUT they are highly addictive & so freaking delicious! (P.S. They come in tons of other flavours, such as coconut, quinoa, onion, cocoa & chestnut, but my personal fave are the fig ones!).

They’re made with only TWO INGREDIENTS (Rice flour & fig powder, both of which are derived from ORGANIC FARMING!).

And unlike most crackers, these babies are LOW IN SODIUM, GLUTEN-FREE & CHOLESTEROL FREE!

I love smothering them in any & all types of nut butter, jam & some strawberry or pear slices & a sprinkle of cinnamon. In fact, that’s actually one of my GO-TO SNACKS!

4. Naked Coconuts Soy Sauce Substitute

SAY BUH-BYE TO GOOD ‘OL SOY SAUCE STAT! I swear, my loves, you will never ever go back once you try this stuff!

Raw, organic, non-GMO, soy-free & gluten-free, this babe of a sauce still has a very rich & salty flavour, ALL WHILE CONTAINING 65% LESS SODIUM THAN REGULAR SOY SAUCE!

OH & if you’re not a fan of coconut, DO NOT PANIC, it has absolutely no coconut taste!). Also known as coconut aminos, this babe of a sauce is enzymatically alive (HENCE, THE “RAW”) & made from fermented coconut sap mixed with unrefined & unbleached sea salt!

You can seriously use it as you would soy sauce in all your recipes, dressings, sauces, and marinades & even with your sushi! SAY BUH-BYE TO POST-SUSHI-DEVOURING-SESH BLOATING!

5. Siete Foods Cassava & Coconut Grain-Free Tortillas

OKAY, in all seriousness, these tortillas deserve their VERY OWN POST. That’s how much I fell in love with them (& INSTANTLY, at that!).

They are made with the HEALTHIEST (most trustworthy, as they say!) ingredients & are COMPLETELY GRAIN-FREE, non-GMO, gluten-free, dairy-free, soy-free & DELISH!

I seriously ate them every single night this week & NOW I ONLY HAVE 2 LEFT & I NEED ME SOME MORE.

The texture on these babies is insane – I warm them in a skillet for a couple minutes & then stuff them with ground turkey, salsa, crisp fresh greens & loads of spices & WOAH!!!TACOS HAVE BECOME MY NEW OBSESSION & IT’S BECAUSE OF THESE!

6. Living Intentions Superfood Cereal (Radiant Raspberry):

GUYS, granola is SO LAST YEAR!!!

This superfood cereal contains raspberries, coconut, SEA BUCKTHORN & ALOE VERA… not only that, but it’s jam-packed & loaded with probiotic cultures to support immune health!

OH & it’s sprouted… & effing delish!

You can legit eat it as cereal with your fave milk (YES, EVEN PLANT-BASED MILK!) or use it in your yogurt or in your oats!

I swear… the ingredients list is like the healthiest I HAVE EVER SEEN.

7. Chosen Foods Coconut Oil Cooking Spray

My loves, as you all know, I SPRITZ THIS SH*T ON EVERYTHING! Literally. It contains zero added chemicals, ingredients or emulsifiers. Read the ingredients list & all you see is COCONUT OIL!

It’s safe to say I use this baby at least once a day, if not more! I also use the olive oil & avocado oil sprays by the same brand BUT THERE’S JUST SOMETHING ABOUT COCONUT OIL & the added touch it brings to all my recipes that just keeps me WANTING & NEEDING MORE!

8. Raw Mio Almond Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Almond Butter

OKAY, y’all know about my relationship (HECK, my INFATUATION & OBSESSION) with all things cookie dough. So, you can imagine when I discovered this baby, THERE WAS NO TURNING BACK.

This stuff is vegan, organic, has the most beautiful & decadent texture & is made with the cleanest freaking ingredients ever (almonds, coconut sugar, Maca, Himalayan salt, vanilla bean & raw chocolate chips made from cacao nibs, coconut sugar & cacao butter!), NOT TO MENTION; the MACA provides an enhanced energy boost!

BASICALLY, think of it as spreading cookie dough on your toast or crackers… literally.

9. Bandito’s Organic Salsa (Roasted Garlic)

HOLY EFF. If you like garlic breath (LAWLZ)… no, but seriously, if you’re a fan of garlic, you are going to LOVE, ABSOLUTELY ADORE & OBSESS OVER THIS SALSA! Not only is it made with all organic ingredients, but it contains ZERO ADDED SUGAR & the ingredients are so clean, it’s kind of scary!

I use it in my turkey pita wraps, ground turkey tacos, as a dip for tortilla chips & it’s so good, that sometimes I actually take a freaking spoonful of it AS IS while I’m recipe-prepping! (OOPS! Sorry not sorry!).

10. Simply Organic Vanilla Extract

OKAY, it’s safe to say I put this stuff on (or well, in) everything!

ZERO SUGAR. ZERO ARTIFICIAL STUFF. Just pure, organic goodness that adds the most beautiful touch of vanilla to all my baking recipes, not to mention my Greek yogurt parfaits & my overnight oats!

I seriously cannot go a day without this stuff!

Get it at all health food stores & even some grocery stores (in the organic section!).

P.S. Next time you go do your groceries (a.k.a. TODAY), take a look at the labels on most vanilla extract products & you will realize that MOST (if not, ALL) are artificial! THAT’S WHY I USE THIS PURE & ORGANIC ONE, yes, even if it’s pricier – TO ME, it’s worth every penny!

11. Better Stevia Zero Calorie Liquid Sweetener French Vanilla

My loves, this is my GO-TO coffee sweetener EVERY morning.

It’s gluten-free, vegan, and non-GMO, has a low GI & is ALL NATURAL (Yes, even the French vanilla flavour is natural!). Containing PURE stevia extract, it is seriously the perfect healthy substitute for sugar & all those artificial & chemical sweeteners!

And, A LITTLE GOES A LONG WAY! All you need is 1-2 drops because it’s super concentrated!

Yes, it’s expensive but it lasts & I mean… we all need a bit of sweetness in our morning coffee!

P.S. They also make an original, dark chocolate, hazelnut & coconut flavour!

12. Eden Organic Black Beans (No Salt Added)

GUYS, you all know about my obsession with black beans, not only in cooking, but ESPECIALLY in baking. These babies can turn ANY RECIPE OR DESSERT into a clean, healthy, not to mention protein & nutrient-packed treat!

These ones are SPECIFICALLY F-AMAZING because they contain zero CHEMICAL ADDITIVES & NO ADDED SALT!

And I mean… not only are BLACK BEANS delish but they are SO RICH in healthy fibres, an amazing source of protein, iron, magnesium & zinc…. & they are PACKED with antioxidants (carotenoids).

What I love about this brand in particular is that it works for me in both cooking & baking (I’ve tried other brands of black beans & found that the taste was too harsh for baking, so I’m obsessed with the versatility of these ones!).

13. Anita’s Organic Mill Almond Flour

If you munchkins have never tried baking with almond flour, THIS BABY IS THE PERFECT ONE TO START WITH!

P.S. It is an amazing source of protein, low-carb, contains tons of nutrients, tastes delicious & gives all your baked treats the most beautiful moist & tender texture!

I LOVE this one because it’s NATURALLY GLUTEN-FREE & has, thus far, been a freaking success & a half in all my baking recipes! Oh & I mean… YOU CAN LITERALLY SMELL THE DELICIOUSNESS WHEN YOU OPEN THE BAG.

14. Cuisine Camino Dutch-Processed Organic & Fair-Trade Cocoa Powder

OKAY, I go through tubs of these like underwear. SERIOUSLY.

P.S. When cocoa powder is Dutch-processed, it means that the acidity & bitterness is neutralized, raising the pH levels to create a smooth flavour & a powder that’s deep & rich in colour, WHICH IS WHY IT IS ABSOLUTELY PERFECT FOR BAKING!

 I use this stuff in all my baking recipes, not to mention I alternate between sprinkling this or cinnamon all over my Greek yogurt parfaits in the morning (OR I use A BIT OF BOTH, let’s be honest!). It’s organic, gluten-free, sugar-free & absolutely DELICIOUS!

15. Hope Organic Kale Pesto Hummus

Guys, if you LOVE kale, this baby is for you. & Even if you don’t, TRY HER ANYWAY!

 

She’s made with ALL ORGANIC & CLEAN INGREDIENTS, and is simply delicious & super-duper nutritious!

P.S. Ingredients-wise? I’m talking chickpeas, kale, olive oil, basil, tahini, hemp seeds, onion, garlic, sea salt, lemon juice & spicesYEP, THAT’S IT!

This is seriously the PERFECT dip for tortilla chips, but I also use her as a spread in sandwiches & wraps OR on those Pain des Fleurs crispbreads, ZOMFG! Top her with some cherry tomatoes & a drizzle of garlic powder, onion powder & black pepper et voilà. Did somebody say snack goals?

Oh & if you’re not a SUPER-FAN OF GREENS (HOW CAN YOU NOT BE?!?!), this babe will give you your greens fix without you even knowing it!

16. Lesser Evil Buddha Bowl Foods The Big Cheddar Organic Popcorn

This is my GO-TO GUILT-FREE POPCORN! Those of you who know me know that I HAVE A HUGE OBSESSION WITH ANYTHING CHEESE! So you can imagine that when I found an organic popcorn made with COCONUT OIL, HIMALAYAN PINK SALT & CHEESE (& some other healthy-ish ingredients), I had to try it & then of course, I FELL IN LOVE.

I usually snack on this at night after dinner when the “junk food” cravings hitONLY THIS IS NOT JUNK FOOD. It’s one of those situations where you feel like you’re treating yourself (& YOU ARE BECAUSE THIS IS SO FREAKING DELISH), but you’re doing so without all the bad stuff! Seriously, the best of BOTH WORLDS!

17. Bob’s Red Mill Nutritional Yeast

And my obsession with CHEESE (or well, anything that tastes or resembles cheese, in this particular case) CONTINUES! I cannot stress enough what a freaking discovery this product is.

NOT ONLY DOES IT PROVIDE ME WITH LOADS OF VITAMIN B12 (which I’m totz lacking because red meat is A TOTAL NO-NO FOR ME), but it’s also vegan, gluten-free, NUTTY, DELICIOUS, PACKED WITH PROTEIN, “CHEESY”-AF & BASICALLY, PERFECT VEGAN PARM!

 I use it in all things marinades, vinaigrettes, sauces, egg scrambles, frittatas, crackers, grilled veggies & as a salad or pasta topper.

Just 1-ingredient (YAS!), caramel-y, pure, organic, vegan, gluten-free & non-GMO, THIS BABY IS THE PERFECT SUBSTITUTE FOR REFINED, WHITE SUGAR IN ALL YOUR BAKING RECIPES!

P.S. As I’ve told you munchkins before when I ranted away about coconut sugar, ALWAYS MAKE SURE TO READ YOUR INGREDIENTS! Coconut sugar should never contain ANY ADDITIVES – it should simply read “organic coconut palm sugar & that’s all!
