Kelly’s Clean-Eating Orange-y Citrus-y Dressing a.k.a. Orange-You-Glad-It’s-Homemade?

HAPPY MONDAY! 🙂 🙂 🙂 (I DON’T KNOW WHY I’M SO ENTHUSIASTIC ON A MONDAY. Oh wait, I do… BECAUSE OF YOU BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE WHO KEEP POURING IN LOVE & SUPPORT. So yeah, woke up feeling AMAZING today! Yep. Even though it is Monday!).
This morning, I wake you with YET another dressing (Sorry not sorry, I’m obsessed with GREENS & SALAD & MORE GREENS, & well, like I said, what’s a salad without a really tasty dressing? NADA!).
This citrusy babe takes less than five minutes to make & all you need are a few ingredients to attain this BRIGHT, LIGHT & FLAVOURFUL GOODNESS. Oh… right, you want to know what it is. SORRY!
This, my loves, is my CLEAN-EATING ORANGE-Y CITRUS-Y DRESSING!
I don’t know if you’ve noticed by now (I HOPE SO), but I do NOT buy salad dressing. I ALWAYS MAKE IT HOMEMADE. Why, you ask?
OKAY, FOR STARTERS, there are just too many options, too many possible flavour combinations & too many yummy things I want to try out! (If I were to go out & buy everything I want to try, I’D BE BROKE!).
Second of all, there are too many misleading labels such as “light”, “low-fat” & “sugar-free”, all of which are strategically worded for the purpose of FOOLING YOU, THE CONSUMER, INTO BUYING THEM.
Not to mention that the ingredients lists would MOST PROBABLY SCARE THE EFF OUT OF YOU. Well, I know it’d scare the eff out of me. I won’t speak for you, BUT YA.
Moral of the story?
There is no reason to pay for ambiguously-labelled salad dressing when you can MAKE THIS GOODNESS COME TO LIFE IN YOUR KITCH & IT’S CLEAN & IT’S HEALTHY & WOAH!
ANYWHO MUNCHKINS… Think:
Freshly-squeezed orange juice (You’re going to need to work those muscles to JUICE THEM ORANGES, but it is well worth-it, my loves!)
Raw organic honey!
Organic white wine vinegar!
Organic extra-virgin olive oil!
Fresh black pepper!
Of course, knowing me, A DASH OF SMOKED PAPRIKA!

AND, BEFORE WE GET TO THE NITTY-GRITTY?
NUTRITION-101 WITH KELLY IN THE KITCH!
And today… the MAN OF THE HOUR IS… ORANGES!
Okay, for starters, who doesn’t LOVE a delish & juicy orange as a snack? THEY’RE EASY TO EAT, PROVIDE QUICK ENERGY & WELL, CITRUSY-DELICIOUSNESS! I’ll take it!
But… DID YOU KNOW THAT THESE BABES ACTUALLY PROVIDE SO MANY OTHER HEALTH BENEFITS? Let me explain!
For starters, the babes contain phytochemicals that protect our bodies against cancer! More specifically, they are rich in citrus limonoids & research has shown that these can help fight cancers of the skin, lung, breast, stomach & colon!
They can also help prevent kidney diseases & reduce the risk of kidney stones!
The babes are PACKED with soluble fibre & are therefore VERY HELPFUL in lowering cholesterol!
They are also SUPER-DUPER rich in potassium, which in turn can help boost HEART HEALTH! As you all know, potassium is an electrolyte mineral responsible for helping our hearts function well. When potassium levels dip, we can develop abnormal heart rhythm & a series of other cardiovascular complications.
ORANGES ARE PACKED WITH VITAMIN C. DUH! AND… VITAMIN C = ANTIOXIDANTS = KELLY IS IN LOVE. And as I’ve said NUMEROUS times, antioxidants help lower the risk of MANY diseases by protecting our cells & neutralizing free radicals (which are the cause of many said diseases).
ORANGES = FIBRE. This stimulates digestion & can help solve an array of digestive issues! (Out of fear of sounding a little too TMI, I won’t go into the deets, BUT YOU CATCH MY DRIFT!).
Oranges are RICH-AF in carotenoid compounds, which are converted into Vitamin A when consumed & help prevent macular degeneration, a.k.a. ORANGES ARE GOOD FOR YOUR EYE HEALTH!
The magnesium & flavonoid hesperidin contained in oranges can also help regulate blood pressure.
ORANGES PROTECT THE SKIN. ORANGES = FREE SKINCARE. ZOMFG. As I mentioned before, oranges are packed with beta-carotene, a powerful antioxidant which protects the cells from damage, free radicals & helps prevent the signs of aging!
The babes also ALKALIZE THE BOD. Although there is this misconception that they are too acidic for some, (BTW, yes, they are acidic before you digest ‘em), BUT THEY CONTAIN MANY ALKALINE MINERALS THAT HELP BALANCE OUT THE BODY ONCE THEY ARE DIGESTED. In this respect, they are super similar to lemons, which are actually one of the most alkaline foods available to us!
Oranges provide SMART CARBS & do not cause a blood sugar spike. Like all fruits, oranges do have simple sugars in ‘em, BUT THE ORANGE HAS A GLYCEMIC INDEX OF 40. Anything under 55 is considered low, btw! This means that as long as you do not overdose on the babes, they will not spike your blood sugar levels or cause issues with weight gain or insulin!
AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST, the polyphenols in oranges protect the body from viral infections!
KAY, I’m finally done! Sorry, that took longer than expected. NOT MY FAULT THAT ORANGES ARE SO GOOD FOR YOU!! Now, let’s get to the nitty-gritty!
My loves, YOU WILL NEED:
- Juice of 1½ oranges (depending how big they are obvs!), should give you about 1/3 cup of juice;
- ½ tbsp. of raw organic honey;
- 2 tbsp. of organic white wine vinegar;
- ½ tbsp. of organic extra-virgin olive oil;
- ½ tsp. of dried parsley flakes (If you’re not a fan of parsley, BYE. No, seriously though, you can totally sub the parsley flakes for some dried dill, chives, rosemary, basil or oregano!)
- ¼ tsp. of sea salt;
- ¼ tsp. of freshly ground black pepper;
- A dash of smoked paprika!
All you munchkins gotta do is combine all of the ingredients in a mixing bowl & whisk VIGOROUSLY until combined & a perfectly-beautiful dressing consistency is obtained!
ET VOILÁ! Now, WHIP UP A BEAUTIFUL GREEN SALAD PACKED WITH LOADS OF OTHER YUMMINESS & POUR THIS BABY ALL OVA’ DA PLACE. Then, DEVOUR!!!!
